Everyone at NewsKnight was overjoyed at being shortlisted for the Shine Media Awards. Writes B Baker
News Knights at KTS Towers were over-joyed when Baldock’s favourite student news website was given the opportunity to attend the Shine Media Awards.
The Shine School Media Award is a highly prestigious award for school media - essentially the Oscars for student newspapers, magazines and websites. NewsKnight has a long history of success at these awards with wins for Most Outstanding student (Joel Speed and Bill Bowkett), Most Inspirational Teacher (Mr McDermott - we have fact-checked this and it’s true), Best Website (twice), Home Page and many more. In its hey-day NewsKnight even won £2000 in prize money.
In previous years NewsKnight has benefited from incredible VI Form editors and section leaders. Many have gone on to work in media, like Ben Crocker who owns his own film production company and Bill Bowkett who is Assistant News Editor at The Daily Mail. NewsKnights’ achievement is made more astounding as the team is entirely KS3 (years 7 to 9).
“We should all be really proud with how far we have come!” Louis
Louis (above right) was overjoyed at this achievement. “It feels pretty surreal to have been shortlisted this year, considering the NK relaunch was only in 2021,” he smiled. “We should all be really proud with how far we have come!”
“I was overjoyed to learn that Shine had short-listed NewsKnight for such a prestigious awards ceremony,” said lead teacher Mr McDermott. “It’s amazing to think that a comprehensive like KTS - with all its financial constraints - can compete with the best private (and most wealthy) schools in the UK.
“I’m so proud of the NewsKnights – they produce brilliant work all year long. I have to give Josh (left) and Louis a special mention as they’ve been at NewsKnight from day one; both lads are up for richly-deserved individual awards. I don’t know of a school that’s served by a news channel like NK; I know that everyone looks forward to NK’s reports on Sports Day, the school production and, my favourite, Christmas Wishes.”
We are sure that everyone in the KTS community will wish NewsKnight every success in the coming awards.
